1455259 Dry shavers PHILIPS ELECTRONIC & ASSOCIATED INDUSTRIES Ltd 19 Dec 1973 [22 Dec 1972] 58760/73 Heading B4B An electric dry-shaver comprises an electric motor 2 having a stator 3 and armature 4, and a long-hair clipper including a reciprocable cutter 28 which may be engaged or disengaged from driving connection with the armature of the motor by means of a manually operable actuating member 29, the actuating member having a pivot-forming part 32 adapted to engage with a further pivot-forming part 31 provided on a lever 30 when the cutter is in driving connection with the armature. As shown in Fig. 1, the armature is mounted on a pivot pin 13 secured to frame plates 9, 10 which are secured to the stator 5. The lever 30 is pivotally connected at one end 43 to the armature by a pin 4 and, at its other end, engages with lugs 39 formed on the cutter. In the position of the actuating member 29 shown in Fig. 1, the pivot-forming part or pin 31 is located between projections 32 on the actuating member thereby causing the cutter to be reciprocated by the lever upon oscillation of the armature; the actuating member is retained in this position by a spring 34. Upon depressing the actuating member, the projections are moved out of engagement with the pivot pin 31 thereby allowing the lever to pivot about its end located between the lugs 39 on the cutter; the cutter is prevented from movement by friction. In the modification shown in Fig. 7, the actuating member is in the form of a rotatable knob 48 having an elongated slot 50. In one position of the knob, the larger sides of the slot engage pin 49 on the lever 30 to cause reciprocation of the cutter; in a second position of the knob, the pin is free to move within the slot and thus prevent actuation of the cutter. The actuating member may be of nylon. In a further modification the oscillating type motor may be replaced by a rotary motor, suitable mechanism being provided for converting the rotary motion of the motor shaft into reciprocating movement of the end 43 of the lever.
