1 Claim. (Cl. 30-43) This invention relates to hair clippers or shaving machines of the so-called dry shaver typeand it has for its principal object the provision in a device of the type described, of an improved cutter head having two diiferent selectively usable cutters, one of which may be arranged, if desired, to cut the hair closer tothe skin than the other.

The present invention relates to certain improvements in the mounting and driving of the there is housed an electric motor (not shown).
The motor is supplied with current by means of a conductor cord 2 which projects from one end of the handle. At the other end of the handle there is provided a pair of cutter heads having outer fixed guard member: 3 and 4, within which cutters 6 and 6 are mounted for reciprocatory movement.
The guard member 3 is provided with notches or slots 1 and 8, arranged in staggered relationat the opposite edges of the guard member, as is clearly shown in Fig. l of the drawing. The
associated cutter I is provided with a series of cutter teeth In which move beneath the slots of the guard member and shear oil hairs which project through such slots during the operation of the devices. The guard member I and the cutter 6 are provided with similar notches and cutter teeth.
The closeness to the skin at which the hairs are cut is determined by the thinness of the guard member at the point along a line opposite to the ends of the teeth of the cutter, which coincides to the line where the major portion of the cutting of the hairs takes place. "The closeness of the cutting of the device is also determined by the width of the slots of the guard member and by varying these details when making the device, the two cutter heads may be arranged so that one cuts very close to the skin and the other cuts the hairs ofi farther away from the skin. The individual teeth of the cutter are preferably formed with finely serrated or roughened edges Hi to prevent the hairs from slipping out from between the shearing edges of the guard and cutter. For sake of illustration, this detail has been greatly exaggerated in Fig. 4.
The exposed portion of the device, with the exception of the cutter heads, is formed from mating halves I and I which define the handle, and a cap l cooperates with the handle sections to give the device a finished appearance. The handle parts I and I may be secured to each other by any suitable means, such as, screws (not shown). The parts I, I and may be conveniently formed from one of the aldehyde condensation products, or from hard rubber or from one of the electrically non-conducting plastics which are now available for such purposes.
The outer guard member of the device may be formed from a single piece of sheet metal II, which is die stamped to the illustrated form which is best shown in Fig. 5. The cap I may be secured to the stamping H by any suitable means such as a screw 12. The stamping ll of the guard member is secured to a molded block II which may be made from a material similar to that used for the handle of the device. The exterior surface of this block conforms to the shape of the interior of the stamping II and the stamping H is secured to the block by any suitable means, such as, screws II. The block it is formed with suitable passageways and openings for the various elements of the device which are associated with the block.
The associated guard and cutter members may be constructed in accordance with the disclosure of copending application Serial No. 21,418 insofar as the number and shape of the slots and cutter teeth and the thickness of the guard guard member 4 by means of a pair of pivoted pins, l5 and associated'springs IS. The pins l5 engage with suitable notches I! at one side of the cutter, and in this manner, the cutter is resiliently held in position with respect to its guard member. The cutter 5 is mounted in exactly the same manner as the cutter 6 by means of springs l3 and pins 20.
The cutters are driven by means of the arma ture shaft 2| of the motor which is concealed within the handle I. This shaft is provided at its outermost end with an eccentrically located pin 22. The pin 22 engages in the channel 23 of a lever 24 which is mounted for oscillation on a pivot pin 25. The lever 24 is provided with forked ends 26 and 21, the former of which is adapted to engage in the slot 28 of the cutter 5 and the other of which engages in the slot 30 of the cutter 6.
The selective engagement of the forked ends 26 and 21 of the oscillatable lever 24 with the cuttersS and 6 is efiected by securing the pivot pin in one end of a shaft 3| which it notched at 32 for accommodation of the lever 24. The shaft 3| is journaled at 33 in the block I 3 and at its other end it is provided with an offset crank pin 34, by means of which the shaft may be rotated to bring the ends of the lever 24 into engagement with one or the other of the cutters 5 and 6. When the shaft 3| is adjusted to its intermediate or starting position, the forked ends 26 and 21 of the lever 24 are free of engagement with the cutter blades and by reason of this provision, it is possible to permit the motor to come up to speed before subjecting it to any substantial load.
The crank pin 34 is adapted to be engaged in the slot 35 of a plate 36 which is slidably attached inside the handle by means of screws 31 and it has an operating member projecting through the handle by means of which the thumb of the operator may be used to shift the member 38 to its upper or lower limiting positions. A flat spring, secured inside the handle of the device eng gas with one or the other of three notches 4| ormed in the side of the plate 36 to hold the plate 36 and the lever 24 in one or the other of their various adjusted positions.
When the member 36 is adjusted to its uppermost position, the forked end 26 of the lever 24 is moved into engagement with the notch 28 of the cutter 5 and when the member 38 is moved to its lowermost position, the forked end 21 of the lever 24 moves into driving engagement with the notch 30 of the cutter 6. The intermediate adjustment of the member 38 is provided for starting the motor as previously described.
By reason of this arrangement, one or the other of the cutters i and 6 may be selectively driven and the device may thus be adjusted to cut the hair either medium or close. The specifled arrangement also has the advantage of greatly reducing the load on the motor to which it would be subjected if both of the cutters were operated simultaneously and as it is ordinarily impossible to use both of the cutter heads at the same time, there is no advantage in driving both cutters at the same time. When adjusted to its neutral or intermediate position, lever 24 may freely oscillate between the cutters 6 and 6 without moving the cutters.
The oregoing description and the accompanying drawing to which it relates, describes what might be termed the preferred mode of practicing the invention. It is to be clearly understood, however, that the invention includes each and every novel feature or combination of novel features herein disclosed, subject only to the restrictions of the prior art, and that the invention may assume other forms and it is not to be limited to the particular and specific structure shown and described herein.
I claim:
A hair cutting device comprising, two pairs of cooperating guard and cutter members, said guard members being fixed and said cutter members being movable with respect to the guard members, means for guiding said cutters for independent movement in said guard members, a lever pivoted for movement about two different axes, means for oscillating said lever about one of said axes, and means for shifting said lever about the other of said axes for effecting a selective driving connection between said lever and one or the other of said cutters.
