Description
March 1, 1955 H. DICKERSON HAIR CLIPPER Filed Feb. 1. 1954 INVENTOR. 07W/7/c' flj/ 046/504 United States Patent HAIR CLIPPER Orville H. Dickerson, Napa, Calif. Application February 1, 1954, Serial No. 407,253
1 Claim. (Cl. 30--201) My present invention relates to hair clippers and more particularly to a combination hair clipper and comb.
The principal object is to produce an improved hair clipper.
Another object is to produce an improved hair cutter in combination with a comb which not only guides the hair into the cutters, but at the same time limits the depth of cut of the cutters with respect to the scalp of the person on which the instrument is used.
ther objects and novel features comprising the construction and operation of the device will be more apparent as the description of the same progresses.
In the drawings illustrating the invention:
Fig. 1 is an upper side elevation;
Fig. 2 is a cross-section taken on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1, portions of which are shown in elevation;
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary lower side elevation with the cover of the body casing and the comb attachment removed;
Fig. 4 is a front end elevation, the dot-and-dash lines indicating various positions of the pivoted comb portion, and
Fig. 5 is a side elevation of the reciprocating cutter blade.
Referring more in detail to the invention, indicates the upper cover casing which is secured to the lower cover casing 11 by the screws 12. 13 indicates a conven tional electric plug and cord 14. An electric switch may be mounted on the cord or in the casing at the option of the manufacturer, not being pertinent to the invention disclosed.
15 indicates an electric motor and fly-wheel 16 to which is eccentrically pivoted a reciprocating rod 16a. The motor 15 may be of any design or type found suitable for operating the reciprocating cutter blade 17, better shown in detail in Fig. 5.
The upper casing 10 is provided with an extended head portion 10:: in the lower side of which is flush-mounted a stationary toothed cutter blade 18 being held securely in the head 10a by the screws 19. In the central portion of the fixed blade 18 is an elongated key-like member 20 which provides a guide portion for the reciprocating cutter blade 17 which is provided with an elongated slot 21 engaging the sides of the key-like member 20.
Secured by screws 22 to the central portion of the said key-like member 20 is a double-ended leaf tension spring 23 adjusted to resiliently bear against the reciprocating cutter blade 17, maintaining close shearing contact with the fixed cutter blade 18 so that the slotted edges 24 of the reciprocating blade 17 and the slotted edges 25 of the fixed blade 18 produce shearing action when the reciprocating blade is in action.
On the extreme end of the upper casing extension portion 10a which comprises a portion of the head portion of the device is a right-angled portion 30 having a lug portion 31 extending below the portion 30 from which is pivoted on the screw 32 a comb portion 33. The other end of the comb portion is pivoted at the pin 34 in the lower casing cover portion 11..
In operation, the comb portion 33 is set at any angle desired raising the cutters 17 and 18 at the desired point and the comb directs the hair to the cutters.
The hair cutter or clipper is primarily designed for use by the person desiring self-use.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new 1s:
An improved hair clipper comprising, a two-piece split casing having a cover portion and body portion, an electric motor mounted in said body portion with a pivoted crank portion extending through an opening in the upper end of said casing, said body portion having an extended head portion extended beyond the forward end of said cover portion to which is fixed a shear portion provided with teeth on opposite sides, said teeth having major axis at right-angles to the major axis of said base extension portion, a reciprocating shearing member resiliently held and guided on the said fixed shear portion, the lower end of said reciprocating shearing member being pivoted to the upper end of said crank portion, a comb member pivoted to the upper end of the said base extension portion and the upper end of said cover portion of said casing, said comb having teeth parallelly arranged with respect to the teeth of said shearing members, the teeth of said comb being longer than the teeth of the shearing members when pivoted to one side above said shearing members, the pivoting motion of said comb having not less than one-hundred-and-eighty degrees movement.
