Abstract
701,510. Centrifugal pumps. HAYWARD TYLER & CO., Ltd., IVANOFF, V., and KING, R. E. Nov. 1,. 1950 [Nov. 1, 1949]; No. 27952/49. Class 110 (1) In a pump and motor combination adapted to pump hot fluid at a high initial pressure, the fluid has access to a common casing enclosing the pump and motor, the rotors of the pump and motor are mounted on a common shaft 2 which passes through a reduced neck portion B of the common casing between the pump casing C and the motor casing (not shown), and a stationary metal sleeve 8 is mounted in the neck portion around the shaft; a small clearance, being provided between the shaft and the sleeve, and a relatively large space being provided between the sleeve and the neck portion, and means are provided in said space to impede the heat transference therein between the liquid being pumped and the motor. As shown, said means comprise vanes 11 extending around the outside of the sleeve with their edges, close to the inner periphery of the neck portion. In a modification some at least of the vanes are omitted, and the space between the sleeve and neck portion is filled completely or in part by a bush made of a material which is a poor conductor of heat, such as synthetic resin, carbon or ceramic material.
