Abstract

1,104,996. Electric motors. CRANE CO. 2 April, 1965 [17 Sept., 1964], No. 14158/65. Heading H2A. [Also in.Division F1] In a motor driven pump for highly voltile or flammable liquids, some of the pumped liquid is delivered through passages 36 to a rotor chamber 33. Part of this liquid returns directly to the pump chamber 12 via the lefthand bearing 35, clearance 23 and the running clearance between rims 52, 53, the latter clearance preventing appreciable flow. The remainder returns to the pump chamber via rotor clearance 42 forming a fixed orifice, chamber 51, right-hand bearing 35, clearance 49, variable orifice 50 and hollow shaft 38. The variable orifice 50 is controlled in accordance with the axial thrust exerted on the shaft 38, and in turn controls the pressure in the chamber 51 to provide the necessary pressure drop across the rotor 39 to balance this thrust. The bearings 35 may be of carbon. The passages 36 provided with baffles 36a, and the clearances 23, 49 and those between a stator isolating sleeve 25 and associated end bosses 19, 31 form flame traps.
