Abstract

700,457. Cable-joints. SUBMARINE CABLES, Ltd. May 16, 1950 [May 16, 1949], No. 13040/49. Class 38 (1). A submarine cable repeater or like housing comprises an elongated tubular casing R formed in one piece of metal of high tensile strength, within bores at each end of which are located bulkhead sections 11 enclosing a compartment W for the repeater or the like, each bulkhead having an aperture for a cable end and being located against endwise movement, and end caps Q secured to each end of the casing Fig. 1 shows one embodiment in which each bulkhead is located by a flanged ring 22 screwed thereon, the flange 22<SP>1</SP> of the ring bearing against a shoulder on the casing, the bulkhead also being welded to the casing at 11<SP>1</SP>. The bulkheads are interconnected by spacer bars 32. A gland assembly 10 for the cable end is screwed into a central aperture in the bulkhead and earthing tapes 25 on the cable are secured to the ring 22. After each end cap Q has been screwed and welded on to the casing its interior is filled with a dielectric 26 through an aperture which is subsequently closed by a gland plug P to which the cable armouring wires S are fastened by a double cone clamp 28, 29. Fig. 2b shows a modification in which ring 22 is omitted and each bulkhead 40 fits into a counterbore 41 on the casing. Also the central gland assembly is formed ntegral with the bulkhead. The space between each bulkhead and its adjacent cap Q is divided into chambers 46, 47 by a diaphragm 45 having a bush 50 for the cable. Chamber 46 is filled with dielectric whilst chamber 47 accommodates a loop in the cable, being enlarged for this purpose by the use of a hollow gland plug and may also be filled with dielectric 47<SP>1</SP>. The bulkheads may be secured to the casing by screwing, either a full or interrupted thread being employed. Specifications 643,550 and 700,460 are referred to.
