In a Cotton-type machine, while nippers 5 grip the yarn, during stitch formation, after loop sinking and dividing rails, 3, 4 are moved in the direction of the arrows, to draw off a supply of yarn from the spool 2 for the next course, and then return to their starting positions. The amplitude of movement of the rail 3, for example, may be varied, as required, by adjustment of the lower end 20 of a link 18 along a cam-rocked operating lever 16. The bar 4 may be provided with guide eyes 21. The yarn passes through a ring 14 and a tension device 12.
