Abstract

955,038. Knitting-machines. KLINGER MANUFACTURING CO. Ltd. Jan. 14,1963 [Oct. 12, 1961; Dec. 4,1961], Nos. 32538/61 and 43343/61. Heading D1C. A circular machine has a reinforcing or splicing yarn introduced over part courses during continuous rotary knitting and has means whereby the float portion extending between the point of withdrawal and the point of introduction of the yarn in each course is extended and drawn by a suction nozzle into a bight outside the needle circle whereafter it is offered to the needles and laid in with the loops of the succeeding course. Prior to the nozzle drawing the bight of yarn, the amount of yarn to be drawn into the bight is measured and formed into a loop. To this end the splicing yarn feeder 21 is introduced and withdrawn during each course by mechanism comprising a slide bar 28 carrying a lever 27 actuated by a cam 26 which is revolved with the needle cylinder. The extent of introduction of the yarn guide 21 is controlled by a further cam 29 determining the movement of the slide bar 28. When the guide is withdrawn from operation, after feeding its reinforcing yarn for a part course, a loop is formed in it between the feeder and the supply. A slide block 53 guided between two guides 50, 51 has an eye 54 through which the yarn passes to the feeder. To form the loop after the feeder has been withdrawn the block is raised by a pneumatically operated piston and cylinder device to extend the yarn in an upwardly directed loop. A series of rods 64 of varying length mounted on a ring rotatable by a pawl and ratchet determine the extent to which the block is raised and thereby the length of the loop of yarn drawn. The position of the rods 64 is determined by a cam segment on a wheel which also controls the movement of the cam 29 whereby the length of the loop of yarn is determined relative to the period the yarn feeder is active. After the block 53 has drawn the yarn into an extended loop the block 53 is lowered and a suction nozzle 39, positioned after the feeder 21 and outside the needle circle, draws the yarn so that the loop is drawn in a bight which extends within the nozzle as shown at L in Fig. 3. The needle cylinder having rotated the yarn feeder 21 is again introduced to feed the yarn to the selected needles whereafter the needles are again raised and the bight of yarn extending from the nozzle is taken by them so as to be laid in with the loops of that course. Instead of the block 53 a pivoted yarn guide 104 which draws a loop of yarn and which is controlled mechanically or electro-magnetically may be provided. A cam 111 serves to determine the extent of movement of the guide 104. Specification 947,037 is referred to.
