Abstract

698,461. I-section steel girders. THOMPSON BEACON WINDOWS, Ltd., J., and SMART, G. R. May 6. 1952 [May 7, 1951], No. 10650/51. Class 20(ii) An I-section girder is of one-piece construction formed by bending sheet or plate steel so that each flange 15, Fig. 7, is of double thickness at one side of the web 11 and of single thickness at the other side, the double-thickness portions of the two flanges being on opposite sides of the web. At least one flange is bent into channel form to receive a wooden batten 22 which may be secured by nails 23 or by tags punched inwardly from the sides of the channel. The web 11 may be strengthened by transverse corrugations or ribs 33, Fig. 10, and flanged holes 24 provided for the passage of conduits. The girder sections may be butt welded endto-end and the weld bridged by fish plates.. In Fig 11, the end of a girder 25 abuts a girder 26 at right angles thereto and a joint is effected by a strirrup-like bracket 27 which supports the end of the girder 25 and is secured thereto by bolts 28, the bracket having a hook part 29 which engages over the flange of the girder 26. The bracket 27 and girder 26 are secured together by a bolt 30.
