Abstract

414,277. Roofs. PHILIPSON, H. A., 52, Karl Street, Jeppe, Johannesburg, South Africa. Dec. 11, 1933, No. 34822. [Class 20 (iv).] A metal structural member 2 for use in roof framing comprises two channel-shaped sheet metal units 3, each of which is provided with spaced transverse stiffening and spacing ribs 6 pressed out from its web 5 in the opposite direction to its flanges 4, and longitudinal stiffening beads 10 pressed out from its web 5 in the same direction as its flanges 4, such units being secured together by separable fasteners with their spacing ribs 6 in contact to provide a slot 11 between the units. The slot 11 is adapted to receive bolts, tenons, and other fastenings for attaching together the member 2 and other parts of the roof structure. The units 3 may be connected together by bolts 9 passing through holes 7 in the panels 8 between the ribs 6. To permit the units 3 to be nested together for transport, the ribs 6, 10 are of rounded formation and the flanges 4 are outwardly flared. The members may be employed for the tie beams 12, king post 13, rafters 14 and purlins 15 as shown in Fig. V, such members being connected together by bolts 16 passing through aligned slots. A piece of wood may be inserted in the slot 11 of a member to enable a ceiling to be nailed in position. For connecting the members end to end the flanges 4 of one member are cut away and the beadings 10 flattened to permit the web 5 to be inserted into the slot of an adjacent member ; alternatively, a piece of flat metal may be secured in the aligned slots of two adjacent members.
