Class 135 Apparatus for regulating the flow of a gas, e.g. hydrogen fluoride, generated from the liquid or solid state consists of a container 2 for the liquid or solid substance, a water bath 3 with electric heating elements 1 and a thermostat 4, and a conduit 8 leading from the container to an orifice 10 which operates in a " choked " condition, i.e. the gas is at sonic velocity at the throat of the orifice. As the flow rate through such an orifice is independent of conditions downstream of the orifice it can be determined solely by upstream conditions, i.e. by the setting of the thermostat, and the use of a calibration chart. In the case of hydrogen fluoride, the orifice plate 9 and the conduits 8, 12, 22 are of nickel and are lagged, and as the flow rate through the orifice is independent of the temperature of the gas only if the latter is completely dissociated to the monomolecular state, an electric heating element 17 is wound round the conduit 8 to superheat the gas to ensure complete dissociation. A copper block 19 soldered to the conduit 12 upstream of the orifice is drilled to receive a thermometer 20 for indicating that the gas is at a temperature at which it is completely dissociated. A filter 14 is fitted upstream of the orifice.
