Abstract
139,281. Parkinson & W. & B. Cowan, Weippert, E. D., and Cheshire, W. D. Feb. 14, 1919. Gas meters.-In a proportional gas meter comprising a main valve controlling the unmeasured flow of gas, and a secondary valve c o n - nected therewith controlling the flow through the tally - meter, a b e l l governor or expanding and collapsing chamber, subject to the pressure of gas on one side and to atmospheric pressure on the other, controls the valve positions. As shown in Fig. 1, the main supply flows from the inlet chamber 1 past a conical valve 10 to an outlet chamber 3, and the proportion to be measured flows past a conical valve 11 to a chamber 6 and through a tallymeter 7, the two streams rejoining at the outlet branch 9 of the conduit. The valve 10 is suspended from the crown of a bell governor 13 into which the gas enters through a stand-pipe 14, and the valve 11 is suspended from, and moves with, the valve 10, so that the areas of the two gas passages a.re proportional. The valve 11 may be made adjustable in size, comprising a tapered core 18, Fig. 3, and two side pieces 19 of V- section hinged to, and adapted to be moved over, the core. The bell is supported from an arm of a counterweighted lever 15 in an open vessel of water. In another form of apparatus, the other arm of the lever 15 carries the bell of a liquid seal, from which is suspended an inverted conical valve regulating the flow through the meter shunt. The valve of the meter circuit may also be carried on the crown of the bell governor controlling an aperture in a fixed plate. Fig. 6 shows a construction in which the bell carries a chamber 21 with an aperture 5 coacting with a fixed cone 11. Fig. 7 shows a further modification in which the valve 11 of the meter circuit is suspended from the main valve 10, which is hollow and partly immersed in a water seal; the gas from the meter 7 flows past the valve 11 to a branch pipe 8 connected with the main conduit on the farther side of the main valve. Balanced double valves may be employed for the main and meter supplies. Pressure gauges indicate the drop in pressure at various points.
