Flow meters, pressure-actuated.-The total flow of steam, gas, air, water &c. in a pipe a, Fig. 1, is measured by connecting the pipe in front of and behind a resistance such as a throttling ring b by pipes c, d to a casing e containing a diaphragm i, and measuring the escape of steam &c. through a needle valve n operated by the diaphragm i to a measuring vessel o. The pipe c is fitted with a throttling ring r, the opening in which bears the same ratio to the pipe c as the opening in the ring b does to the pipe a so that the flow of steam through the pipe c to the measuring vessel is proportional to the flow of steam through the pipe a. The pipe d is fitted with a similar ring g or shaped to provide the same, resistance as the pipe c in order to prevent sudden changes of pressure on the diaphragm. Similar means may be used to determine the flow from the casing e. In a device shown in Fig. 2 suitable for measuring the flow of steam, the pipe c opens into a chamber f in which the casing e containing the thin metal diaphragm i is arranged. The upper chamber s of the casing e communicates with the chamber f through a branch c' containing the throttling ring r. The lower chamber t of the casing e communicates with the pipe d through a pipe d' containing a throttling ring g of practically the same dimensions as the throttling ring r. A leak k allows a small escape of steam from the chamber f to the pipe d. The diaphragmoperated valve n through which steam escapes to the measuring vessel o may be arranged to act as an injector and induce a flow of air through holes u from a chamber v. The chamber u is connected to a pressure gauge x by a pipe w having a high resistance leak z to the atinosphere. The reading on the gauge x indicates the rate at which steam is being consumed.
