Abstract

241,652. Stoney, G. G., and Boswall, R. O. Aug. 12, 1924. Testing and measuring viscosity of liquids.- The fluid is passed through a tube and an orifice in series and the pressures of the fluid measured at suitable points. The casting a is formed with top and bottom wells b, c connected by a tube d. The liquid to be measured is supplied under pressure through a pipe e and stop cock f to the well b from which it flows through the tube d to the well c and from there through a suitably shaped orifice h to a receptacle. Pressure gauges i, j serve to measure the pressure in the wells and a pocket g for a thermometer enables the temperature to be measured. From pressures measured as above, the viscosity can be readily found by calculation, or from a standardized curve; an empirical relation found to exist between factors which apply to the flow of liquids through an orifice being combined with known expressions for the discharge through tubes and orifices.
