Abstract

856,125. Photo-electric devices. FOXBORO CO. July 7, 1959 [July 10, 1958], No. 23360/59. Class 40(3). A flow measuring device comprises a vertically disposed tapered opaque tube 24 through which fluid flows between an inlet pipe 14 and an outlet pipe 16 such flow causing an opaque spherical member 25 contained in tube 24 to move up and down the tube in accordance with the flow rate and so vary the amount of light from a source 26 which reaches a photo-electric device 33. The signal output of the latter, which is indicative of the flow rate, is supplied to a recording and control device 12 (which may be located at a position remote from the flow measuring device) from which a signal is derived to control a pneumatically operated valve 13 in the main flow pipe 10. To compensate for light transmission changes due to other causes (e.g. colour changes in the fluid) a further opaque tube of uniform bore is coupled into the flow circuit between the tapered tube and the outlet pipe, one end of the further tube being open to the light source and the other end provided with a photo-electric device the signal produced by which is referenced against the signal from the photo-electric device associated with the tapered tube. The fluid may be a liquid or a gas.
