Abstract

931,471. Automatic control of viscosity. INSTITUT FUR GRAFISCHE TECHNIK. June 15, 1961, No. 21693/61. Class 38 (4). [Also in Group XIX] In a control system for regulating the viscosity of a fluid, a piston is allowed to fall freely through the liquid, the time of fall being measured by photo-cells and being compared electronically with a set falling time characteristic of a desired viscosity to obtain a difference signal which is used to control the opening of a supply cock for a flow of solvent into the fluid whereby the viscosity is maintained constant at the desired value. As shown, a measuring insert 1 (see Group XIX) has a hollow cylinder 2 projecting into a liquid 3 the viscosity of which it is desired to regulate. A piston within the cylinder 2, movable by an electromagnet 6, is allowed to fall freely through the liquid. The time of fall is measured by photo-cells (not shown in Fig. 2) and is compared in a control component 12 with a set falling time representative of a desired viscosity selected by a pointer 16. Any difference between the actual and set times causes a signal to be produced whereby a supply cock 19 is opened for the flow of solvent C to the liquid 3 the viscosity of which is thus maintained constant.
