Abstract
Pig iron, or iron or steel scrap is melted in a cupola or other shaft furnace with the addition of calcium carbide to produce cast iron. The furnace is preferably basic lined. The amount of calcium carbide used may be 1-7 per cent of the metal charge of the furnace. A coke bed having calcium carbide dispersed in the upper layer may be formed in the cupola and then alternate layers of iron, flux and coke, the coke layers only containing calcium carbide. The last ten charges of coke may contain no calcium carbide. High sulphur scrap or coke may be used to produce a low-sulphur high-carbon cast iron.
