Abstract

695,628. Radiators for space heating. RICHINGS, J. W. Feb. 9, 1951 [Feb. 13, 1950] No. 3572/50. Class 64 (ii) . A self-contained space heater, of the kind comprising a hollow body in which the active medium circulates, is provided with a passageway, or a set of passageways which do not communicate with each other between their ends, the or each passageway formming a closed loop arranged in a vertical plane to enable the liquid to circulate by a thermo-siphon action. The passageways communicate at their lowest points with heating means 19 and the quantity of fluid employed is such that in its liquid state, shown at 20, it is sufficient to cover the heating means. In the construction shown, the heater comprises two similar side plates 10, 11 each so pressed as to provide a plurality of open sided channels whereby they form, on assembly, a single passageway for the fluid. The fluid passes from the heating means 19 through portions 12, 16 of this passage and then takes the zig-zag path 13 bounded by walls 18. An auxiliary chamber 23 in communication with the lower end 32 of the downflow section 13 assists the circulaton when starting up from cold. The heater has a temperature-sensitive device 22 capable of regulating the input of electric power to the heating means 19. In a modification, one of the plates 10 or 11 I is flat, and in another modification a flat plate is interposed between the two plates shown to provide two separate passageways which do not communicate with one another except near the heating means.
