695,604. Soles for footwear. BELLAVOINE, L. June 1, 1951 [March 2, 1951], No. 13067/51. Class 17 (ii). [Also in Group VIII] A composite leather shoe sole comprises an external leather layer 1, an internal layer 2 of flexible material such as leather, imitation leather, or cardboard, and an intermediate layer 3 of a flexible impermeable material such as rubber or a polyvinyl ester, the composite sheet being provided with perforations 4 extending completely through layers 2 and 3 and only partly through layer 1. Layers 1 and 2 may be obtained by splitting a single leather sheet, layer 1 being the grain side and layer 2 the flesh side, and may be roughened before uniting by an adhesive consisting of rubber latex or an emulsion of polyvinyl chloride or acetate applied to both layers. The adhesive forms the layer 3, or the layer may be a thin sheet of natural or artificial rubber glued or stitched between layers 1 and 2. The holes formed in layer 3 shrink on withdrawal of the perforating points to form holes 7 of capillary dimensions.
