Abstract

770,171. Shoe stiffeners. HOLT (CHEMICALS), Ltd., L. Dec. 14, 1954 [Dec. 23, 1953 ; April 7, 1954], No. 35768/53, and 10207/54. Class 17 (2). [Also in Group VIII] A toe or counter stiffener comprises a layer of impregnated base material intimately combined with a relatively thin lamina of non- porous and stretchable material. The base material may be any suitable textile fabric, swansdown, felt or paper with an impregnant such as celluloid, or a synthetic resin or a rosin. The non-porous lamina may be transparent or opaque with or without colouring and examples are a viscose film or foil of Cellophane (Registered Trade Mark) or preferably a film of rubber hydrochloride such as Pliafilm (Registered Trade Mark). The layers are joined together by adhesive and pressure and the stiffeners may be blanked out of laminated sheets. If the non-porous film is on the inside of an unlined shoe it prevents sticking to the last while on the other side it prevents the solvents used damaging the upper. The first Provisional Specification states that a non- porous layer may be provided on both sides of the base layer.
