694,014. Fluid friction brakes. SCHENCK MASCHINENFABRIK DARMSTADT GES., C. Nov. 1, 1951 [Nov. 13, 1950], No. 25611/51. Class 103 (i). An hydraulic eddy current brake, more particularly for use on heavy road and rail vehicles has a rotor part 3 keyed to rotate with the drive shaft 2 and a " stator " part 5, 5a which is normally free to rotate but which can be held stationary when a braking torque is required by means of a band brake 7 that acts upon a drum 6 which joins and rotates with the two stator parts 5 and 5a. The drum 6 is cooled by the liquid within the hydraulic brake, liquid being fed therein by a connection 17 to a central chamber, passing by passages 20, 20a to the eddy chambers or pockets 4 and out by passages 21, 21a and pipes 23 to containers 25 and 26 which also serve to collect leakage fluid. As shown in Fig. 2, the band brake comprises an operating rod 9 and a stirrup member 11 with adjusting screws 12 for ensuring an even lifting off of the band.
