Abstract
693,366. Endless conveyers. MELVIN & GILLESPIE, Ltd., and HALL, W. A. June 15, 1951. [June 16, 1950] No. 15058/50. Class 78 (i). In an automatic tension controlling mechanism for endless conveyers means is provided for setting up a main stenting force on the chain or belt and a less force opposing the main stenting force to reduce this to a preselected minimum, and means is also provided for rendering said opposing force ineffective if and when the full effect of the main stenting force is required to overcome an obstruction in the chain or belt circuit, said opposing force automatically becoming again effective after the obstruction is overcome. The tensioning wheel 2 is mounted in a block 4 slidable in a stool 5 and connected by a rope, belt or the like to a weight 6. A block 7 also sliding in the stool 5 bears against block 4 and is acted on by small weight 8 through belt 7<SP>2</SP> so as to oppose the weight 6 and reduce the working tension. The tension is increased upon the conveyer belt 1 being obstructed, by arranging a rack 9 on the stool engageable with a pawl 10 on block 7 so that block 7 is prevented from following the block 4 when the latter is pulled inwards by the obstructed belt, thus eliminating the opposing effect of small weight 8.
