Class 44 A striking plate, mounted for pivotal movement to release the latch bolt when required, is normally retained in the securing position by an abutment displaceable by means of an electromagnet the armature of which is mechanically retained in the attracted position after energisation and released when the striking plate is rotated. The striking plate 4 shown in Figs. 1, 2 in the securing position is pivoted at 5 in a box-like casing 1 and spring loaded to the securing position. A nose 10 on the striking plate rests on the pivoted abutment 8 which is retained by an arm 11 engaged with a spring loaded catch 12. Electromagnets 16 are arranged when energised to attract a pivoted L-shaped armature 15 the end of which abuts a peg 14 on the catch 12 which is thereby displaced to release the arm 11. A light blade spring 19 mounted on the abutment 8 is adapted to snap down behind the armature 15 and retain it in the attracted position. The striking plate 4 is now retained only by spring pressure and will turn to free the latch bolt 22 when pressure is applied to the door, as shown in Fig. 4. The spring 19 is then lifted clear of the armature which returns to the initial position, allowing the catch 12, abutment 8 and striking plate 4 to return to their initial positions ready again to secure the latch bolt when the door is shut.
