Apparatus for raising water by compressed air comprises a receiver adapted to be immersed in water which is admitted into a chamber of the receiver through a valve and is discharged from the chamber through a valve-controlled riser by the compressed air which is admitted and exhausted to and from the chamber under the control of a piston valve operated by the compressed air through the intermediary of a liquid medium. The receiver 61 has an inlet chamber 62 communicating through valves 66, 67 with two chambers 64, 65 which communicate with a central delivery chamber 70. Pressure air from a main 79 is distributed alternatively to the chambers 64, 65 by a slide-valve distributer 85 actuated by pressure air from the main 79 which acts through a pipe 80 and liquid columns in pipes 83, 84 under the control of a valve 81 having an atmosphere vent 81a. The receiver 61 delivers water through a pipe 74 to a further receiver 95 of similar construction controlled by a slidevalve distributer 86 actuated by the liquid columns in the pipes 83, 84. An automatic valve 93 reduces the air supply to the distributer 86 until the receiver 95 has been filled. A further receiver may be disposed in series with the receivers 61, 95. The valve 81 has a rotary vane 81b driven through ratchet and pawl mechanism by an eccentric on a compressor shaft or by a pulsating diaphragm which communicates with the head of a compressor. The rotary valve may be replaced by a pair of connected slide valves actuated by a pendulum.
