Abstract

692,870. Chucks. DAMIEN (LONDON); Ltd., M. July 11, 1951 [July 11, 1950], No. 17346/50. Class 83 (iii). [Also in Group XXIII] A chuck for engaging the bore of a work-piece 3 in a grinding-machine (see Group XXIII) comprises three jaws 17 having rollers 18 in engagement with a conical member 15 that can be moved axially to cam the jaws outwardly against the influence of their springs 14. As shown, the member 15 has been displaced, to cause the jaws to grip the work, by the expansion of a spring 19 between the end of a rod 16 carrying the member 15 and a sleeve 20 fixed to the bore of a shaft 12 on which the chuck is mounted for rotation. If the chuck is raised to tilt its supporting structure 5, 6 about a pivot 4 sufficiently to carry a bell-crank lever 25 into engagement with an abutment 26, a lever 24 will be rocked to displace the rod 16 and so release the work from the jaws. The latter may be shaped to engage various work-pieces 3, 3<SP>1</SP>, 3<SP>11</SP> separately.
