Abstract

692,175. Lathe and like centres. WIEST, W. July 17, 1951 [July 20, 1950; Jan. 2, 1951], No. 16918/51. Class 83 (iii). A lathe centre adapted to support and drive a work-piece, comprises a spring-pressed centreportion 2, an externally-tapered sleeve 1 and a cap-piece 5 capable of limited axial movement relative to the sleeve and centre portion, ring- shaped clamping springs 9 being arranged between the centre portion and the sleeve so that on movement of the cap 5 the inward travel of the centre is arrested and it is clamped in the central position. The front face of the cap 5 is roughened to engage the work-piece and pins 8 prevent relative rotation between the cap and the sleeve 1 but allow limited axial movement. A split collar 6 may be interposed between the sleeve 1 and the inner surfaces of the clamping springs. Similar springs may be fitted to the rear end of the centre portion, the gripping action being transmitted by a further sleeve from the front clamping springs.
