Abstract

712,024. Grinding cylindrical surfaces. LANDIS TOOL CO. Sept. 23, 1952, No. 23773/52. Class 60 Rotary movement is imparted to a workpiece 35, Fig. 1, having internal and external cylindrical surfaces, at a surface other than the cylindrical surfaces while the workpiece is supported at a point or along a line of contact on one of the cylindrical surfaces and the other cylindrical surface is subject to the action of a grinding wheel 11. The annular end faces of the workpiece are first ground parallel between the two flat opposed surfaces of a pair of grinding wheels after which . the external or internal cylindrical surface is ground in a conventional manner, e.g. by centreless grinding. One of the end faces of the workpiece is then engaged by a magnetic chuck 30, and if the external surface is to be ground, the internal surface is engaged by peripherally spaced shoes 42, 43 on a spindle 41 slidably mounted under control of a lever 44 in the tailstock of the machine. If the internal surface is to be ground, the previously ground external surface is supported on angularly spaced shoes 50, 51, Fig. 3 while an internal grinding wheel 60 treats the internal surface. A groove may be ground simultaneously by a wheel 11. The workpiece supports are so disposed that the axis of the workpiece is displaced from that of the chuck.' To facilitate movement of the workpieces to and from the grinding position, the support surfaces may be mounted on an arm 80, Fig. 7, pivotally mounted on a shaft 81 and provided with stops 97, 99 which co-operate with fixed stops 98, 100 respectively to locate the arm in the grinding and loading positions. A cam surface 95 displaces the workpiece axially with respect to the support surfaces as the arm 80 is moved downwardly and hence brings the workpiece into flush relationship with the chuck. When the magnets of the latter are of soft-material, they are protected from abrasion by the workpiece by buttons 36, Fig. 1, which protrude beyond the surface of the magnets. The arm 80 may be arranged to actuate a switch to close a circuit to a solenoid operated hydraulic valve which controls a feed cylinder to move the grinding wheel to operative position.
