691,765. Mowing machines. WALLEY & CO., Ltd., E. S., and WALLEY. F. G. Feb. 21, 1952 [Feb. 22, 1951], No. 4312/51. Class 6(ii) Relates to machines for simultaneously mowing and picking up grass and like crops comprising ganged mowing units 1 which project the mowings on to a transversely-moving conveyer 2 that carries the mowings away from the units. According to the invention, the mowing units are driven from the power take-off shaft 11 of the tractor to which the machine is hitched at 7. A cutting speed for mowing independent of the travelling speed can thus be provided for. The invention is shown applied to a machine as described in Specification 676,380 in which the power takeoff shaft 11 drives a conveyer having one part travelling transversely to receive the mowings and another part travelling upwards for raising them and depositing them on a second conveyer (not shown) leading to receiving vehicle. In the present invention, the shaft 11 also drives the mowing units through chain gear 13, shaft 16, gear box 17, chain drive sprockets, 27, 26, and universal shaft couplings 29; 30. The machine is supported on three castor wheels 6, and a folding tow-bar 8 permits of hitching the tractor to one side for trailing the machine compactly when transporting.
