Class 51(i) An apparatus for generating combustion products and delivering them to a point of use comprises a duct 10 within which a fuel-air mixture is burned, the duct having a supply section 11 for the fuel-air mixture, a combustion section 12 and a delivery conduit 13 of greater length than the combustion section, the three sections being disposed coaxially. Means such as a flame holder 15 is provided between the combustion and supply sections, and an opening is provided in the combustion section whereby surges of pressure downstream from the opening are relieved so that they do not extinguish the flame in the combustion section. In Fig. 1, the opening comprises a series of radial perforations 14, and the duct has a diffuser portion 18 downstream of the perforations whereby the velocity energy of the gases is converted into pressure. In Fig. 3, a muffle or expansion chamber 19 surrounds the double row of perforations 14a and has a relief valve 20 so that 'the relief of pressure is opposed by a pressure greater than atmospheric. The muffle chamber also incorporates a cylindrical flame arrester 22 to cool the gases passing therethrough. In Fig. 5 air or other diluting liquid is led into the expansion chamber through the pipe 23 and passes through the opening 14b to mix with the combustion gases in the duct. Surges of back-pressure are relieved through the opening 14A. In a further embodiment, a spray of water or inert gas or vapour is added to the combustion gases downstream of the opening 14b.
