690,511. Skimmer bucket excavators. PRIESTMAN BROS., Ltd. Oct. 29, 1951 (Nov. 28, 1950], No. 29122/50. Class 68(i) In a skimmer excavator in which the bucket 7 is drawn along the flanges 4 of a boom 3 by a hoist rope or ropes 13, an additional rope or ropes 23 are attached to the rear of the bucket and are paid out at exactly the same rate as the hoist rope or ropes 13 are wound in, and vice-versa. The hoist rope or ropes are wound on a winch 16 which can be driven in either direction and which is co-axial with the pivotal attachment 15 of the boom 3 to the cab of the excavator 1, and the additional rope or ropes 23 are also wound on said winch but in the opposite direction. Thus the bucket can be positively hauled back along the boom or when the bucket is allowed to return along the boom due to gravity and would strike a stop 26 at the inner end of said boom before it can be checked by braking-the winch drum 16, the unnecessary uncoiling of the hoist rope or ropes 13 from said drum is avoided.
