Abstract

612,781. Drag-line excavators. WILKINS, E. G., and WILKINS, G. R. June 3, 1946, No. 16845. [Class 68 (i)] The hoist line 1 of a drag-line excavator is connected to the bucket 6 by chains 5 at a point 7 intermediate between the mouth of the bucket and its centre of gravity when full. A tipping cable, which may consist of a chain 16 and a cable 17, is attached to a lug 14 on the rear of the bucket and passes over a pulley 2 on the hoist rope 1 to be attached to the drag line 8. During hoisting, the drag line 8 remains slack and the bucket is prevented from inclining downwards to the rear by more than a few degrees by a stop 13 on the tipping cable engaging with an abutment on the hoist cable. To empty the bucket, the drag line cable is tensioned, so causing the tipping cable to exert a force on the rear of the bucket and so turn it about the axis of suspension 7. The bucket may be adapted to operate in the normal manner by disconnecting the tipping cable from the lug 14 and reconnecting it to a lug 21 on the front of the bucket, and by shifting the hoist cable attachments to stub axles 20 at the rear of the bucket.
