Abstract

<PICT:0690450/III/1> In an evaporator comprising cylindrical chambers 3 and 3a each having end-walls heated by hot fluid circulating in hollow-parts 4, and each being provided with rapidly rotating paddles 2 which force the liquid-being-evaporated across the heated end-walls to the peripheries of the chambers, from whence it is conveyed by pipes 7 and 7a to free spaces 5 surrounding the axle of the paddles, these free spaces are sub-divided into intercommunicating parts by annular diaphragms 13, 14, which regulate the flow of liquid through the evaporator. In the Fig., the liquid is introduced into the evaporator through inlet 6, and the diaphragms are disposed downstream of the discharge-ends 10, 10a of the pipes 7, 7a, but they may alternatively be disposed upstream thereof. p In an example, the chambers have an outer diameter of 2 feet, the free spaces 5 have an outer diameter of 11 inches, and the heating surface is about 1 square yard. The hollow parts 4 are supplied with steam at 30 p.s.i.g. The paddles are driven at 200 r.p.m. The evaporator can deliver 22 gallons per hour of very concentrated black liquor.
