Abstract

A film-evaporator comprises a steam-jacketted cylindrical column having a tubular impeller rotatably mounted coaxially within it, the impeller having a plurality of apertures opening into its interior and a plurality of radially extending blades projecting outwardly and being at their outer margins deflected rearwardly with relation to the direction of travel of the impeller, liquid to be evaporated being introduced into the interior of the column whereby it is spread into a thin film on its interior wall by the centrifugal action of the impeller. The drawings show a column 7 surrounded by a shell 12 <PICT:0665856/III/1> <PICT:0665856/III/2> whereby a jacket-space 14 is formed through which steam is passed via an inlet 15 and an outlet 16. Mounted within the column 7 is a rotating impeller tube 22 which extends upwardly into a dome 9 and which has blades 28 welded to it which are shorter in length than the column 7 so as to leave a head-space x. That part of the impeller tube 22 within the column 7 has four rows of apertures 26 and that within the dome 9 has a plurality of apertures 27. Liquid to be concentrated is introduced into the head-space x via line 29 and runs as a thin film down the interior wall of the column 7. Evaporated vapour passes off through apertures 26, up the tube 22, through apertures 27, and out via the dome 9 and line 30 which has a vacuum pump connected thereto. Concentrated liquid flows out via line 31.
