Abstract
In a process and apparatus for mixing gas and liquid into a liquid medium, the gas and liquid (which has a velocity of 5-100 m/sec) are injected through nozzles into an openended chamber the mean inlet diameter of which is twice to twenty times the mean diameter of the liquid nozzle, and the length of of which is three to thirty times the diameter of the equivalent cylindrical tube (if the chamber is not of circular cross-section). As shown the chamber is a tube 3 liquid and gas are injected by coaxial nozzles 1, 2 and mixture is discharged at 10. Part of the liquid is externally recirculated by a pump 9, and there may be a tube 7 through which internal circulation in either direction may take place on the air lift principle with the assistance of guide baffles (not depicted). The chamber may be a conical frustum, or (see Fig. 2, not shown) annular (3) in conjunction with radial nozzles (1, 2) in star formation. The process may be applied to the oxidation of hydrocarbons especially cyclohexane.
