Abstract

High pressure fluid is admitted to a tapering cross section spiral path of increasing dia. (as if wrapped around a cone with its apex away from the pump) concentric with the volute casing of a centrifugal pump. This high pressure fluid flow enters the pump volute, from the path with a high swirl about the centre of the volute and thus acts as an impeller. Lower pressure fluid is drawn in through an 'eye' inlet opposite, passes through the swirl area, where it is accelerated with min. loss and then into the diffuser where a pressure head is generated. Thus the whole device acts as a centrifugal pump, but without an impeller or other moving parts. Except for guide vanes the volute contains only fluid. Can be used as a mixer or a chemical reactor.
