928,386. Centrifugal separators. JAMES HOWDEN & CO. Ltd. Feb. 20, 1962 [Feb. 20, 1961], No. 6638/62. Class 23. In a dust separator, Fig. 2, comprising a tubular conduit a, helical whirl-producing blades b at the inlet end of the conduit, a cleaned gas outlet d and a peripheral dust outlet m adjacent the outlet d, gas which passes with the separated dust into an outer settling chamber is returned through an orifice n disposed in the inlet end of the conduit to direct the returned gas in substantially the same direction as the flow of main water in the conduit at the return orifice. The orifice n may be wholly or partly annular. The blades b are mounted on a hub g which also supports one or two diffusers e, f disposed in the outlet d and/or the conduit end. Alternatively, a single diffuser is located in both the outlet and the conduit end. A baffle o is provided in the outer casing to assist in the settling of the dust. In a modification, Figs. 1 and 3, the returned gas enters the conduit tangentially through an elongated slot k past the blades b and the dust is similarly discharged through a slot h. The slots b may be sloped to lie at right angles to the adjacent path of the main gas flow. In a further modification, the separator may have an annular orifice n and an elongated discharge slot k or vice versa. The conduit may be inclined or vertical, the baffle o being dispensed with in the latter case. A member of horizontal separators having a common baffle wall may be surrounded by a common settling chamber.
