Abstract

1,146,262. Centrifugal separators; separating particles from gases. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. 5 May, 1967 [23 May, 1966], No. 20971/67. Headings BIT and B2P. In a vortex separator particles separated from the main portion of a gas stream are extracted with a minor portion of the gas at the periphery of the vortex chamber and passed therewith through a secondary separator from which the gas portion is returned to a low pressure zone of the vortex chamber. The particles may be liquid or solid and the gas may be a vapour or a gas and/or vapour mixture. In a steam separator, Fig. 1, swirl and de-swirl vanes 3, 5 are mounted at the inlet and outlet of the vortex separator between the separator casing 2 and streamlined guiding members 4, 6. Separated water particles are extracted with a portion of the steam through annular slots 7, 8, 9 into annular collecting chambers 10, 11, 12 connected by pipes 13, 14, 15 to a common line 17 which opens into a secondary separator 18 having a baffle 16 and a constant liquid-level float valve 20. Constrictions 13a, 14a are provided in the pipes 13, 14 to prevent circulating flow from upstream to downstream slots due to the downstream decreasing pressure. Separated steam is led from the separator 18 through a return line 21 which passes through one of the swirl vanes 3 and communicates with a passage in the guiding member 4 opening at 22 into the core of the vortex formed in the vortex chamber. In a modification, Fig. 2, the secondary separator includes a screen 26 for trapping the water droplets which collect in a bottom part 27 of the separator and are removed through a valved conduit. In further modifications, the secondary separator may take the form of a corrugated plate separator or a centrifugal separator.
