Abstract

<PICT:0842270/III/1> In a process for separating liquids from gases and especially water and oil from well gas, the crude gas stream enters a separation zone under pressure to impinge on a deflector plate, preferably of concave surface, and the gas is discharged without substantial loss of pressure, and the separated liquids collected. A separating chamber 1 is provided near the gas inlet 2 with a concave deflector plate 4, a series of vertical plates mounted in a housing 9 and a mist eliminator unit 10. The distance between the deflector plate and the inlet is equal to the diameter of the inlet pipe, and the diameter of the deflector plate is double that size. The gas impinges on the plate 4 and is deflected radially, leaving liquid to drain into the sump; the stream of gas still under pressure, is made uniform by vanes in the housing 9, on which more liquid is deposited, and finally passes through a demisting unit 10 containing a filter element 12, and a baffle 15. Liquids draining into the sump from each stage separate into oil and water layers, and the latter is discharged from a collecting pipe member 18 having a longitudinal slot on its underside. The level of water is controlled by a float valve 22 which rests at the oil/water interface. Modified forms of oil/water separator are described.
