Abstract

647,102. Hollow rollers. AMERICAN VISCOSE CORPORATION. April 28, 1948, No. 11644. Convention date, June 21, 1947. [Class 34(i)] A calender or like roll comprises a cylindrical member 2 of high heat conductivity, a closed head 3 and an annular end portion 4 having a central opening 15. The end 4 has a member 5 having flared inner and outer portions surrounding the central opening. The drum member is fixed to a shaft 16 by screw members 7 which extend into the flange-like member 8 fixed to the end of the shaft which is journalled in a bearing 9. Heating means comprise a stationary helical coil of tubing 10 having inlet 11 and outlet 12 fitted into stationary connecting block 13, the coil being heated by steam or other heated fluid or by electrical means. The drum is partially filled: With a high heat capacity flowable medium 16 which may be .liquid or a dry medium and which conducts heat from the coil to the drum wall as it flows around the drum. To increase turbulence and mixing of the conducting medium baffle :means 17 are provided.
