Abstract
689,947. Making grids for thermionic valves. PHILIPS ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd. June 12, 1951 [June 15, 1950], No. 13902/51. Classes 83 (ii) and 83 (iv). [Also in Group XL (a)] In winding a flat grid for an electron discharge tube, two bevelled frames 1 and 4 are placed backto-back to constitute a former, and the wire 2 wound on; the wire is then soldered to the frames and the portions 6 cut away, leaving two flat grids. Because of the bevelled frame edges 3, 5, the part of the wires between the planar grid portions bear on sharp edges only, instead of a continuous thickness; this reduces the possibility of slight irregularities in the diameter of very fine wires causing the wire to tilt as it passes across the side of the former, and so produce divergencies in pitch. In Fig. 6, the grid frames 9 and 10 are separate from the winding former 8, and may be slid into grooves therein and clamped in position, before or after winding the grids. The former may be of triangular or polygonal section, enabling three or more grids to be wound at once, Figs. 8 and 9 (not shown). The technique is suitable for wire of less than 25Á diameter, with a winding pitch of less than 50 Á.
