Abstract
1310397 Ion sources UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY 15 Oct 1971 [20 Oct 1970] 49829/70 Heading H1D In an ion source comprising a sputtering electrode (not shown) having a surface from which the desired ions are derived and an elongate filament 10 juxtaposed to said surface, said filament is movable relative to the said surface whereby used portions thereof can be moved away from their juxtaposition to said surface and replaced by fresh portions. The sputtering electrode which is as described in Specification 1,064,101 is mounted in an arc chamber 25, the filament 10 passing through apertures 32 in the wall of the chamber. A spool 11 of the filament 10, e.g. tungsten wire, is mounted in an evacuated chamber 12 and tensioned by a spring 13. The filament is drawn from the spool by motor driven rollers 39 each provided with a circumferential groove and urged together by a spring 42. Current is supplied to the filament by sliding contacts 31 and 33 forming parts of connector assemblies 21 and 38 including ceramic tubes 21 and 36 through which the filament passes. After use the filament is extremely brittle and is broken into short lengths by a bend 44 in a glass tube 43, the broken lengths falling into a collector bin 45.
