Abstract
619,720. Making parts of thermionic valves. M-O VALVE CO., Ltd., and WARREN, G. W. Dec. 20, 1946, No. 37499. [Classes 83 (ii) and 83 (iv)] In a method of making a filament for a thermionic discharge device, wire 3 is wound helically around two metal strips 1, Fig. 1, separated by spacers 2, and is soldered thereto, the wires 5 on one side of the helix are then removed and the members 1 are cut transversely as at 6 to form individual wires 7 soldered to end tags 8. The strips 1 are preferably of nickel coated on one side with copper, and the wire is of tungsten. After the wire is wound, the frame 1, 2 is heated to soften the copper coating and so fix the wire to the strips. By selecting spacers 2 having a greater expansion than the wire, the wire is simultaneously placed under tension and any bends or kinks removed. In a modification, the wire is wound around two superposed rectangular frames 11, Fig. 4. After fixing, the wires along each edge are cut to allow the separation of the two frames. The ends 9 are then cut off and the sides of the frames severed transversely. In either form, the transverse cutting of the strips or frames may occur before the cutting of the wire. If it is desired to give the filament an oxide coating, this may be done before the strips or frames are cut.
