Abstract
890,213. Making grids for electron discharge devices; brazing. ELECTRIC & MUSICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. June 11, 1958 [June 18, 1957], No. 19117/57. Classes 83 (2) and 83 (4). A method of making a grid includes the steps of winding grid wire on a grid support which is provided with notches each having an inclined side so that during winding the wire engages said inclined sides and passes therealong into the apices of the notches so that the angle at which the wire is disposed relatively to said support is determined by the disposition of said apices, and thereafter joining said wire to said support. A molybdenum frame 1 has a punched or etched series of notches 2, 3 in opposed edges, the apices of the notches 2 being in line with those of the notches 3 so that when the frame is wound with wire in a conventional winding machine the wire slides into the apices and the resultant wound grid has a series of parallel lengths 6 of wire normal to the notched edges of the frame 1 and on the other side of the frame a series of parallel lengths 7 inclined to said edges. The wound wire is then secured to the frame by brazing and if desired, the wire lengths 7 removed. The wire may be of goldplated molybdenum or, after winding, the molybdenum wire and frame may be coated with gold, the assembly being heated in hydrogen or inert gas to cause the gold plating to braze the wire to the frame. The notches may be of V-shape with one edge normal to the edge of the frame. The grid wires 6 may be wound at an angle other than normal to the frame edges.
