689,901. Induction heating; rotary compressors. SCIENTIFIC & INDUSTRIAL RESEARCH, HONORARY ADVISORY COUNCIL FOR. Oct: 13, 1950 [Oct. 25, 1649], No. 27332/49. Class 39(iii) In a rotary compressor, e.g. an axial flow compressor with a stator including guide vanes 12 and stator vanes 14 arranged in rings separated by a narrow gap in which a rotor with blades 19 is mounted in the gap, an electro-magnetic anti-icing unit comprises a pair of magnetizable pole pieces 22, 23 extending radially one in each of the guide and stator vane rings or in each of contiguous rings of the stator, the outer ends of the pole pieces being bridged by a magnetizable yoke 24 carrying an energizing winding to provide a magnetic field between the pole pieces across the gap containing the electrically conductive rotor blades in which eddy currents are thus induced. The pole pieces are arranged staggered in the stator casing so that the magnetic field between the pole pieces is mainly perpendicular to the chord of the rotor blades, which are non-magnetic e.g. of aluminium alloy or austenitic steel Several de- @cers may be spaced equally in the circumference of the stator and also axially of the stator, e.g. one bridging the guide and first stator ring and another bridging the first and second stator vane rings. The pole pieces have flat opposite faces in parallel planes set athwart the general plane containing the pole pieces and have rounded edges 25 so that they replace vanes when inserted in the stator. D.C. or A.C. e.g. at 400 cycles per second is used. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 625,299.
