Abstract
689,757. Joining cable end insulation by injection-moulding. COMPAGNIE GENERALE D'ELECTRICITE. Feb. 15, 1951 [Feb. 22, 1950], No. 3730/51. Class 87 (ii). The injection piston 17 is urged to the right, to inject plastic material into a mould 5, by means of a separate piston 22 through the intermediary of oil contained in a cylinder. The cylinder has a large-diameter compartment 2 in which slides piston 22 and a small-diameter compartment 2a in which slides injection piston 17. Piston 22 is moved by means of hand-wheel 3 and screw 3a. Piston 17 moves faster than piston 22 by reason of their differing diameters. An oil return 24 is provided. A manometer 14 indicates the pressure applied to the injection piston. The injection cylinder 4 and the mould 5 are heated by burning gas from nozzles 9, 10 and container 8, the cylinder and mould being shielded from direct contact with the flame by a finned screen not shown. The moulding material, which may be gutta-percha, polyethylene, isobutylene, vinyls or polyamides, is initially placed in the injection cylinder in the form of premoulded cylindrical sticks, and is injected into the mould through valve 18 The mould is in two parts hinged together at 20a and secured by 'nuts 19, 19a, and has axial holes through which pass the cables 6, 6a to be joined. The mould comprises removable patterns of different dimensions for various types of cables, and has devices 21a for tensioning the cable to keep it central in the mould. After injection the pressure is maintained, the flame from nozzle 10 is extinguished and the mould is allowed to cool, for which purpose it may have large cooling fins, or is cooled by means of a manually-operated water pump 11 which sends water through cooling chambers 12, 13 in the mould.
