[Class 39 (iii)] [Also in Group V] Thermosetting or thermoplastic material is injected at great speed from the cylinder into the mould through a nozzle which is heated while the material is passing therethrough, but is cooled when the mould has been filled. The nozzle is heated at a rate which is greater than the rate of heating of the mass in the cylinder and which, if applied to thermosetting material for a substantial length of time, would result in irreversible hardening of the material. Figs. 1 and 5 show an arrangement in which the nozzle 12 is electrically heated by two electrode elements 50 clamped thereon, each electrode element comprising a copper block connected by cables 51 to a, transformer 52. Each block is continuously cooled by water passing through a, passage 60. Just after the (water-cooled) plunger 5 begins its ejecting stroke, switch mechanism 70 cuts in the transformer, and during the stroke the nozzle is heated. As the stroke ends, the switch cuts out the transformer, which is not cut in again as the plunger recedes. Fig. 8 shows an arrangement in which a water-cooling jacket 64 surrounds the nozzle and an induction coil 66 surrounds the jacket. As the movable platen 24, carrying the moulded article or articles recedes to the right, springs 36 are compressed against the end of the platenmoving cylinder 25, and the moulded articles, carried on an undercut rod, are ejected. Material is continuously fed into the cylinder, from a hopper 2 and continuously ejected therefrom.
