Abstract

689,543. Friction clutches. KREIS, F., and SOC. ITALIANA BREVETTI AUTOMOBILISTICI AR.L. Aug. 1, 1951 [Aug. 2, 1950], No. 18220/51. Class 80 (ii). A centrifugal clutch comprises centrifugal weights 9 movable radially in a carrier 8 secured to a driving shaft 1 between frictionfaced clutch plates 10 co-operating with the sides of a driven drum 2, with pairs of balls 15 movable in over-size bores 11 in the weights and springs 13 acting on the balls through tapered plungers 14. At a certain speed, determined by an encircling spring 16 and by centrifugal weights 3 which are carried by the drum 2 and which act through a plate 6 on detents 19 carried by the stems of the weights 9, the latter move outwards and the balls 15 act on the plates 10 to engage the clutch under the pressure of the compressed spririgs 13. When the speed falls below a pre-determined figure, the weights 9 move inwards so that the balls 15 now contact the outer part of the bore 11 until they reach the edge 18 of the plates 10, whereupon the springs 13 act to press the balls over the edge and inwardly, and the clutch is suddenly released.
