Abstract

689,361. Plate heat-exchangers. BROWN FINTUBE CO. May 8, 1951, No. 10787/51. Class 64 (iii). Secondary heating surfaces for heat-exchangers comprise a stack of metal strips each having a greater thickness along its longitudinal edges than between such edges and having a series of pin-like fins extending from a zone adjacent one of the thick edges to a zone adjacent the other of said thick edges. The thickened edge portions of the strips may be of bulbous cross-section as shown in Fig. 4, formed by a rolling or extruding operation or alternatively a flat strip may be turned at the edges. The pin-fins are formed by perforating the strips with either elongated-oval or rectangular openings, the ligaments between the perforations constituting the pinfins 48. The pin-fins may be bent out of the plane of the strip. A plate heat exchanger having such secondary heating surfaces in the fluid passages is shown in Fig. 3 and comprises nested flanged plates 20-24 with the two fluids flowing in heat exchange relation through alternate passages between the plates, a plurality of strips being stacked in each of the fluid passages and bonded to the walls thereof Adjacent the inlet and outlet conduits to and from each of the fluid passages, a number of stacked channel members is provided, extending transversely to the stacked strips, these channel members being bonded to the side walls of the fluid passages and being provided with holes in their base portions so that they serve to distribute the fluid uniformly across the stacked strips, Fig. 2 (not shown).
