688,085. Plate heat-exchangers. AIR PREHEATER CORPORATION. Jan. 3, 1951 [July 8, 1950], No. 218/51. Class 64 (iii) A heat-exchange unit comprises a plurality of strips 10, each strip having a row of perforations 12 and being centrally dished between its marginal edge portions 16 along lines parallel to and adjacent to the row of perforations to form a pair of lateral flanges 23, said strips being first joined in pairs back to back and ther a plurality of such pairs being bonded together at their edge portions 16 as shown in Fig. 5 with the lateral flanges 23 of each strip aligned to form the opposite walls 26, 28 of a passage for one fluid (e.g. air) and with ligaments 14 between the perfora tions constituting pit fins in said passage, and the marginal portion! 16 of each strip constituting longitudinal fins on the outer faces of the passage walls for contact with a second fluid (e.g. hot gas), closure means being provided to bridge the passage walls at their side edges (e.g. by means of strips 30). A heat-exchanger comprises a plurality of such units spaced apart by strips 31 forming also side closures for gas passages 9 between adjacent units. Adjacent the air inlet to the heatexchanger,the perforations in the dished parts of the strips are reduced in number progressively as shown in Fig. 1, there being one less perforation in each successive dished portion and deflector strips Fig. 7 (not shown) of varying length are placed across the perforations of successive rows to distribute the air uniformly in the air passage of each unit.
