Abstract
A detergent comprises 8-38 (preferably 16-36) per cent by weight of a sodium alkyl aryl sulphonate, calculated upon the basis of the pure compound, 2.5-40 (preferably 5-30) per cent by weight of a water-soluble sodium carboxymethylcellulose, calculated upon the basis of the pure compound and 0.1 to 75 per cent (preferably 0.1 to 50 per cent) by weight of an inorganic "builder" which may be sodium carbonate, "modified soda," sodium metasilicate pentahydrate, anhydrous sodium metasilicate or a mixture of sodium carbonate and sodium silicate. "Modified soda" is defined as a mixture of sodium carbonate and bicarbonate in various proportions. The mixture of sodium carbonate and sodium silicate contains 2.0-4.2 mols. of SiO2 per mol. of Na2O, and may be produced by mixing the silicate with the carbonate in such proportions that it is completely absorbed upon the surface of the carbonate to produce a dry mixture. The alkyl aryl sulphonate has an alkyl group containing an average of 12 carbon atoms derived from a petroleum distillate fraction boiling in the range of 150-300 DEG C. The aryl group is derived from a hydrocarbon in the benzene series such as benzene, toluene or a xylene. The sulphonate may be a technical grade of sodium alkyl benzene sulphonate containing 60 per cent by weight of sodium sulphate. The sodium carboxy-methylcellulose may be a water-soluble technical grade containing 50.8 per cent of the pure compound having one substituent group per anhydroglucose unit, 10.9 of sodium glycollate, 12.0 of sodium carbonate, 15.7 of sodium chloride and 10.6 per cent of moisture. The mol. ratio of sodium carbonate to bicarbonate in the modified soda may be 1 to 1.39. Specification 688,754, [Group III], is referred to.ALSO:A detergent comprises 8-38 (preferably 16-36) per cent by weight of a sodium alkyl aryl sulphonate, calculated upon the basis of the pure compound, 2.5-40 (preferably 5-30) per cent by weight of a water-soluble sodium carboxymethylcellulose, calculated upon the basis of the pure compound, and from 0.1 to 75 per cent (preferably 0.1 to 50 per cent) by weight of an inorganic binder which may be sodium carbonate, "modified soda," sodium metasilicate pentahydrate, anhydrous sodium metasilicate or a mixture of sodium carbonate and sodium silicate.
